One midsummer night, my friends and I went on a test of courage. The moment we crossed the Meganebashi bridge and entered the tunnel, the chilling air felt like it was stinging our skin. I thought I heard something from further inside, so I shone my phone's flashlight and saw a shadow that looked like something was moving... The moment my friend screamed, "It's beckoning us!", we all ran away as fast as we could. I can still remember the terror I felt that day.

2. Hashikura settlement (a village erased from maps) (Ueno Village)

Hashikura settlement is a legendary, almost mythical, village that supposedly once existed, and urban legends whisper about it being erased from maps. Located deep in the mountains, the circumstances surrounding its abandonment are shrouded in unsettling rumors.

• An eerie silence envelops you, giving you the feeling that you are being watched.

Hashikura settlement, a village not on any map. Just the sound of the name sent shivers down my spine. The moment I got out of the car and started walking along the animal trail, I was enveloped in a silence that seemed to swallow up all the surrounding sounds. The shadows of the abandoned houses seemed to be watching me, and I got goosebumps all over my body. Suddenly, I felt someone's gaze from behind, and when I turned around, the depths of the forest, where there should have been nothing, were pitch black and simply eerie. I hurried back to the car, but the heavy atmosphere of that village still seems to cling to me.

3. Akagi Shrine (near Onuma Lake) (Maebashi City)

Despite its beautiful scenery, Akagi Shrine, situated on the shores of Lake Onuma on Mount Akagi, is associated with numerous ghost stories. Many of these legends are sad tales related to water, and the shrine takes on an even more mystical atmosphere at night.

• The ghost of a woman in a red kimono is walking on the surface of the water.
• If you visit at night, you can hear a woman sobbing from behind you.
• A child's ghost has been sighted by the lake.

At night, Akagi Shrine was enveloped in a cold air, a stark contrast to its daytime solemnity. As I walked along the shore of Lake Onuma, I distinctly heard a woman sobbing in the distance, a "whoosh, whoosh" sound. At first, I thought it was the wind, but it seemed to be getting closer, so I instinctively turned around. There was nothing there, but a chill ran down my spine, and I vowed never to come here at night again.

4. Sanmei Lake (Sanmei Dam) (Takasaki City)

Lake Sanmei (Sanmei Dam), built to secure water for agriculture, is said to have been the site of many drowning accidents in the past, despite its beautiful scenery. As a result, a heavy atmosphere always hangs over the water's edge, and it has become famous as a haunted spot.

I was at Lake Sanmei at night with some friends. We had the car windows down, and suddenly the inside of the car became freezing cold. Then, my friend, who was sitting in the passenger seat, pointed and said, "Hey, look at that!" There, beyond the dam's fence, was a blurry figure standing. And it was staring straight at us. At that moment, my body froze as if paralyzed, and I couldn't even press the accelerator. That must have been someone who rests in this lake.

5. Old Mikuni Tunnel (Minakami Town)

The old Mikuni Tunnel, once part of an important main road connecting Niigata and Gunma prefectures, was built in a rugged mountainous area, and construction was extremely difficult, resulting in many casualties. Therefore, it is believed that the lingering regrets of those who perished still remain within the tunnel.

6. Fukiware Falls (Numata City)

The Fukiware Falls, often called the "Niagara of the East," is a breathtaking sight, but contrary to its beauty, a legend of a dragon god's sacrifice has been passed down through generations. It was the day I visited Fukiware Falls. As I was looking at the waterfall basin from the walking path, my legs suddenly became unsteady, and I nearly fell into the basin, as if someone was pulling me. I desperately clung to the handrail, and at that moment, amidst the roar of the waterfall, I thought I heard a low female voice saying, "Come over here..." Perhaps that was the voice of a soul being drawn into the waterfall basin.

7. Tanigawadake (Ichinokurasawa) (Minakami Town)

Mount Tanigawa, also known as the "Mountain of Death," is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the mountain with the most fatal climbing accidents in the world. Ichinokurasawa, in particular, has claimed the lives of many climbers due to its treacherous terrain. It is said that even now, the souls of those who were prevented from reaching the summit still wander this mountain.

My friend and I shivered and immediately went outside, but that night I developed a high fever and was bedridden for several days. 9. Kiryu Meijikan (Kiryu City)

The Kiryu Meiji Hall, a beautiful Western-style building constructed in the early Meiji period, was originally used as a hospital. Who could have been the owner of those footsteps?

10. Mount Haruna (around Lake Haruna) (Takasaki City)

Mount Haruna, with its beautiful scenery centered around Lake Haruna, hides many sad stories. The area around the lake, in particular, is known as a suicide spot, and it is said that the souls of those who perished still wander there.
